Was Mommie Dearest okay after all?
Well, let's just say I have my opinion (as usual), but I'm wondering about yours.
I'm sure the truth about Joan Crawford's mothering lies somewhere between these two versions. And different children in a family can have wildly different experiences and feelings growing up together--their own personalities and the chemistry each have with their parent(s)being factors. The relationship between Crawford and her son Christopher struck me as particularly telling, however. She never forgives him for being an angry, rebellious teenager, refusing to see him and his new family when he's a young man. Gave me chills.
Yes, agree with you about the Christopher story -- JC was Mommy Dearest incarnate and didn't deny it.
I have to say I thought Cathie sounded really, really dumb. And Christina's story rings a whole lot truer. Cathie strikes me as one of those people who'd think the serial killer next door was a nice guy.
And I can't believe she and her twin would stay silent for decades about how wonderful their mother was so as not to generate more publicity for "that book".

She did sound dumb!

Yes, she seemed bizarrely childlike.
Strange story.
