I have recently become hooked on this blog, from occasional RTK commenter Beth, and feel right at home -- it's a music-lover's blog, populated by people who debate, for example, what's the best Pixies song (an impossible argument for me, because I couldn't choose -- there are just too many good Pixies songs).
But it got me thinking about what are the five albums that I still listen to, again and again, and never get tired of hearing. These are albums that I have on my iPod and will never remove. There's not a weak song on any of these albums, and I never shuffle past any of them.
Here they are, and I'd love to know yours:
Definitely Maybe, Oasis
Being There, Wilco
The Golden Age, Cracker
Gold, Ryan Adams
Come Down, The Dandy Warhols
The Bends, Radiohead
OK, I know, that's six. I couldn't help myself.
Here are some runners-up, albums I still listen to frequently: Achtung Baby, U2; Blur, Blur; Purple Rain, Prince; Doolittle, the Pixies; Disintegration, The Cure; the last Broken Social Scene album; This is Big Audio Dynamite, Big Audio Dynamite; Nevermind, Nirvana; Live Through This, Hole.
I know there are many others I am forgetting. I love the first Madonna album, for example, with "Borderline" on it, but haven't really liked her since except for the song "Ray of Light." I still listen to really early Aretha Franklin, for example, before she was turned into a soul queen and was singing sweet songs like "You Made Me Love You" and sounding 13. I listen to a lot of Stevie Wonder and Jackson Five, too, much to the chagrin of many in my life. As far as I am concerned, there aren't many pop songs as perfect as "ABC."

I'll post some of the songs on my site later and you can listen to them.
You must try Nouvelle Vague -- you'd love them if you like lounge/bossa nova music. Great French band doing great, bossa-nova-y covers of 80s punk and new wave hits.
I'm a soundtracks kind of person. Here are my top 5.
1. Kinky Boots
2. Dear Fankie
3. Better Than Sex
4. Love Actually
5. Adventures of Priscilla...
Huh, I never really looked at them all together and noticed that they are all non-us movies.
Tanya and Jacy, have you checked out Thievery Corporation?
Jacy, I'm on the quest now for some Nouvelle Vague, thank you for the recommendation.
MdG, YES! Thievery Corporation, I have some of their stuff. And I'll check out those soundtracks too.
You'll never listen to Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" in the same way after hearing Nouvelle Vague's version. Or XTC's "Making Plans for Nigel" either.
Exile on Main Street, the Stones
Songs in the Key of Life, Stevie Wonder
Rumours, Fleetwood Mac
Summerteeth, Wilco
London Calling, The Clash
In no special order:
- Urban Hymns - the Verve
- Dark side of the moon - P. Floyd
- Hang on Little Tomato - Pink Martini
- Big Band; Small World - Jools Holland
- anything by Artie Shaw or Billie Holiday.
I am also a big Bossa Nova and Samba fan so I like Gilberto and Jobim,
a huge blues fan (Buddy Guy, Van Morrison, Robert Cray),
Sole (MJ Blige, A. Green, B. White) And because they are of my era U2, Bowie, Sting, Queen - Freddie rulz.
Oh, yes, the late Ian Dury and the Blockheads.
Saw White STripes on Friday and liked a lot.
I will give Nouvelle Vague a go.Thnx for the tip
Get the first one, with "This is Not a Love Song" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" -- you will adore it!
Damn, this is hard — and the list seems to change with the seasons. Currently:
1. R.E.M.: Murmur
2. Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot or Summerteeth
3. Oasis: (What's the Story) Morning Glory?
4. Ella & Louis (duets of the great standards)
5. Jeff Buckley: Grace
6. B-52's: B-52's/Wild Planet
And I LOVE Nouvelle Vague, Jacy! So much fun. I just missed them in concert, I believe.
I saw them in concert and they were fantastic, and for their encore, they did Mexican Radio, that fabulous Wall of Voodoo song with Stan Ridgeway singing lead. I actually get a shiver up my spine just remembering it.
I have been trying to find a version of their cover of it ever since, and cannot.
I immediately downloaded the original. That song stands the test of time.
Forgive me for not doing this.
I am deeply insecure about mymusical tastes.
It's OK, Tearfree. You are so superior in all other ways. It's OK if you don't have a favourite Wilco song/album. I do not possess your vast knowledge of softwood lumber, Crocs or Scottish terriers.
Jacy,
It's never to late to learn about something new. Tomorrow, I will go down and buy two new CDS including one Wilco one and I will put them on my Ipod and listen to them and report back.
I can do it. I know I can. I'm not ready to retire with my Scottish Terriers to the country just yet.
Wilco, here I come.
I would suggest Summerteeth for you first Wilco coupling.
OK, Summerteeth it is.
Now, which Ryan Adams CD?
Gold
This is so exciting!!!
But please don't be mad at me if you hate them both.
No,no I won't hold it against you.
I learned not to get mad at friends over differing tastes back in grade nine when my BFFs didn't find anything special about The Catcher in the Rye.
What can you do?
You should have dumped those friends.
I have to admit my own girlfriends' obsession with the Grease soundtrack almost prompted me to find new girlfriends who liked the Clash -- and I did, actually, but kept the old ones too.
