Doing My Part/Birthday Horrors

With Tearfree taking a blogging breather, I am going to try to step up to the plate and contribute more to this beloved space. I realize I am a pale replacement for Tearfree's usual wit, intelligence and insight, but I will do my very best.

Today I am embarking upon a bold experiment. My daughter turned 16 last week and we are all vacating the house to allow her to have friends over for a party. Naturally, I am terrified. We've all read the horror stories about teen house parties that quickly explode out of control due to text-messaging. One kid texts another kid who texts another kid who texts another kid, and soon a party that was meant to involve no more than a couple of dozen close friends swells into the hundreds -- and kids who don't even know who's having the party show up.

In the Toronto area in the past few years, two teenaged boys were killed by intruders who showed up at the parties unannounced and just happened to be drunk and carrying knives.

So am I insane?

That is a question I am asking myself today as I actually bake the birthday cake. I am pondering decorating the cake with the following message: "IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHOSE BIRTHDAY CAKE THIS IS, GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE."

Anyway, my daughter assures us everything is under control, she has ensured her friends have not invited any other friends, we will be close by, she will call 911 if any strangers show up, she will call us immediately if anything goes wrong, we can come home by midnight and the house will be clean and spotless, yada yada yada.

And I suppose there comes a time in any teen's life where, as the parent, you have to take a chance and see if they'll live up to their promises.

In the meantime, the rest of us are going to see "Borat." Is nice!!!

UPDATE: We got home at midnight and my daughter and her friends were busy cleaning, vacuuming, mopping floors, etc. As Borat would say: "Success!!"

What did you think of Borat?

Well, I had a no-rents party at 15. We drank beer, two guys went streaking, and I met my first love. Depsite all those things, it really was rather tame.

Every once in a while an example of great parenting comes along.

Cudos for you.
