All about Ipods

I am a Shuffle user. It works for me as jewelry and I like the fact that it removes a certain amount of control from my hands and adds some serendipity to life. Whenever I borrow my daughter's Mini I start going crazy, trying to do all the stuff I can't do on my Shuffle.

In general I love my Shuffle but there are some things that really, really bug me about it, number one being that I can only use it on my home computer and not my two other computers. Now, I know you can do things to your computers and Ipod to fix this -- complicated things that you read about on geek web sites -- but I don't want to have to do that. I just want to be able to use my Ipod on my three computers with no hassle.

I also want Apple to include a regular charger with every Ipod they sell so that the thing can be charged anywhere not just on my ONE HOME computer. And I don't want to pay an exorbitant price for their charger. While I was on vacation in the USA, I noticed some entrepreneurial type had set up Ipod charging booth in the middle of the mall and I didn't know whether to be happy that he was providing this service or pissed off that we need it.

But enough about the downside of the Ipod, which in general is a creation that makes life a lot better. Let's have some Ipod fun. Confess. What are the three songs on your Ipod that you're embarrassed about and what are three songs on your Ipod that you'd be happy to discuss with the hero of High Fidelity?

Tearfree's songs:

The Cheesy
  1. Hands Clean by Alanis Morissette
  2. You're Beautiful by James Blunt
  3. I'd be Surprisingly Good for You (From the musical Evita)

The Champions
  1. Because the Night by Patti Smith
  2. No woman No Cry by Bob Marley
  3. Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell (her incredible most recent version)
C'mon confess. I've laid myself bare for you.

A lot of the guys give me a hard time for still liking Early Madonna, but I like what I like. I've got Material Girl, True Blue, Papa Don't Preach and much more Madonna on my Ipod.

I just treated myself to the original Judy Garland concert at Carnegie Hall. Rufus recreated that performance recently and I'm waiting for that CD to come out.

Somewhere Over the Rainbow is beautiful. Cigarettes and chocolate Milk is classic Rufus. And Tearfree, don't worry about Evita. I have Buenos Aires on my Ipod. It's a great song and a great town. I went down there to visit an Argentinean who used to work up at our camp and later bought himself a ranch. Great beef.

I'll have to come back to you with the songs, but wanted to tell you that I don't have an iPod, but an iRiver - it's great. I can use it with any computer that has a USB port and Windows Media Player, and it charges anywhere (wall socket) - which is great because I am bad about forgetting to charge the thing, and it helps me maintain some sanity when I am alone in the office on Saturdays...

This is a great post, possibly your best ever, and have I mentioned in our blossoming friendship that I am a complete musical freak? And obsessed with my iPod, the burning question in High Fidelity -- "Am I depressed because I love hurting pop songs or do the hurting pop songs I love depress me?" -- Ryan Adams, the shuffle function on my iPod, the Beat, Wilco, Nouvelle Vague, Prince, good disco, The Dandy Warhols, the first Madonna album, the soundtrack to The Matador, etc etc etc???

OK

The embarrassments:

1. Back to You -- Bryan Adams
2. Human Touch -- The Spice Girls
3. Thank U -- Alanis Morrissette

The utter champions, the songs I never ever tire of hearing no matter how many times they show up in shuffle

1. Red Eyed, Blue -- Wilco
2. Not if You Were The Last Junkie on Earth -- The Dandy Warhols
3. English Girls Approximately and/or La Cienega Just Smiled -- Ryan Adams

(I could go on to about 20 here ... a recent newfound song that I cannot get enough of is In a Manner of Speaking, by Nouvelle Vague)

Tearfree: Shall I burn you a disk of my favourites?

Clarification:

Here is the actual question in High Fidelity that has deep meaning and relevance for me ...

"Which came first — the music or the misery? Do I listen to pop music because I am miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?"

If any of you can bring yourself to find La Cienega Just Smiled or In a Manner of Speaking or Red-Eyed, Blue, three songs that have often prompted me to weep, you might see what I mean.

Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth, however, is just a rollicking and snide good time.

My God ... I warned you I was obsessed.

oh god how it hurts me that no one has commented on my comments

Wow, Spice Girls. I had a roommate in college that I swear bought the CD just to bug the stew out of me...

Oh jacy, I think you're a music gal like me - brings a tear to my eye!

"Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" - song came out around '97, correct? If so, I don't have the song or album but remember it was a darn fine tune.

I'll add some songs later, I'm just able to comment a bit here and there right now and don't have the time it would take to go into this...

emily, i think i heart you

indeed, junkie was around '97. that whole album was phenomenal, really ... all sorts of good songs including cool as kim deal, good morning, be-in, boys better ... etc etc etc

Jacy,

I'm getting kind of fed up with James Blunt. I'm going to try out your recommendations.

Hi Concerned Lumberjack,

I was so sorry to hear about your Mom. What a scare but what wonderful news in the end. some say a heart is just like a wheel. I'll get Rufus to send you and your mother the studio CDs from Carnegie Hall. The rest of the family sends their love.

I'm buying all Tearfree's favourite CDs.

Emily said...

Since I share my iRiver with the husband and kids, I'm excluding their songs.

Embarrassments (this was difficult):
1. Picture - Kid Rock & Sheryl Crow
2. Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana
3. Hole in My Head - Dixie Chicks

Winners:
1. Girlfriend - Matthew Sweet
2. Family Tree - Ben Kweller
3. Johnny Come Lately - Steve Earle
4. Hurt - Johnny Cash (I don't care if Trent Reznor wrote it. The Man in Black gave that song an honesty it lacked before)
5. Any Foo Fighters song

Sadly, I could go on...

I wanted to buy an iPod and borrowed one from a female friend of mine to give it a test run. All she had on it was the world's cheesiest Arabic pop songs...and when i tried it on shuffle, it sort of shuffled my brains. Trust me on this, Arab pop songs and iPod can be disasterous...

I never bought the iPod after all. I plan to join the hype soon, though.

embarrassments:
1)Billy Jean - Michael Jackson
2)A girl like you - Troggs
3)Love is Love - Capadonna

i can listen to these all day:
1) Crazy love - Brian McKnight
2) Moondance - Van Morisson
3) Respect - Aretha Franklin

Billie Jean, wow! I heard the greatest version of Billie Jean this winter. It was at a deli I love where the manager makes all these weird music tapes to play. It was buy a guy from Paris called Deise Mikhail and I would be totally proud to put it on my Ipod if I could find the file but so far all I can find is the CD, which I would have to order.

Jacy said...

Emily ... so with you on Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. And the video -- did you see the video?? One of the most heartbreaking of all time.

Emily said...

jacy - that video was heartbreakingly sad and poignant, especially since you knew he did not have much time left. June Carter in the background watching over him about breaks me up every time...

I live around Nashville (I live fairly close to where he lived in Hendersonville - BARRY GIBBS bought his house, which just does not seem right, and you can pass by the House of Cash - not open to visitors - on Main St), so it was a VERY big deal when he and June Carter died. They lived such full lives though.

Jacy said...

did you like the movie? i thought it was great.

Emily said...

jacy - yes, Walk the Line was awesome. I officially forgave Reese Witherspoon for Sweet Home Alabama.

I have worshipped Johnny Cash for a very long time! Loved the movie too.
