Readers have asked Tearfree to explain Quebec's seemingly strange Stephen Harper moment.
How is it that the "most liberal" and most fahionable province could be supporting such a mean, mean guy who doesn't know how to dress anywhere near as well as the new leader of the PQ?
The answer is that none of these contradictions are new. As Yvon Deschamps said way back before the first referendum: "The real Quebecer knows what he's after, and that's an independent Quebec in a united Canada" ([...] le vrai Québécois sait qu'est-ce qu'y veut. Pis qu'est-ce qu'y veut, c't'un Québec indépendant, dans un Canada fort."
Plus ca change...

Les Quebecois are catching on. They're getting mad at him for Afghanistan and the way he's treating the media. Quebecers like a free press.
Could you please explain what they are getting mad at him for about Afghanistan?
They don't like that we're in Afghanistan and they particularly don't like the way he's banned the media from the ceremonies when the bodies retrun from Afghanistan and that the Tories have now stopped lowering the flags to half-mast upon the death of Canadian soldiers. None of that is playing well in Quebec. The honeymoon will soon be over. No amount of sucking up to Charest is going to work for much longer, particularly since most Quebecers loathe Charest and want him to step down.
But Afghanistan is a UN-approved mission.
I thought Canadians were totally down with the UN. am I missing something?
Polls show Canadians don't like the Afghanistan mission because it is far more dangerous than the average "peace-keeping" mission. This has not been peacekeeping, for the most part. They have been in open firefights with the Taliban and that was not supposed to be part of the equation, and there have been many more deaths of soldiers than expected.
The reason why we send soldiers with guns and military training-- and not Koolaid Mummies-- on "peacekeeping" missions is precisely because they are dangerous.
Really amazing! Useful information. All the best.
